Perennial, 30–90 cm, with small oval leaves that show translucent oil glands when held to the light, and clusters of five-petalled bright yellow flowers with prominent stamens.
Herkomst
Europe and western Asia; naturalised across temperate zones worldwide.
Traditioneel gebruik
Traditionally harvested around 24 June — the feast of St John — from which the plant takes its name in many European languages.
Interessante weetjes
When the flowers are macerated in oil, the preparation turns a deep ruby red — the pigment hypericin bleeding into the oil.
