Semi-shrub, 30–70 cm, with grey-green wrinkled leaves and lilac-blue lipped flowers. Strong, warm scent when touched.

Mediterranean basin; naturalised in herb gardens worldwide.

Mentioned by Hippocrates. The medieval maxim 'Cur moriatur homo cui Salvia crescit in horto' aptly summarises its status.
